Roy Spagnolo reflects on his family story; one of migrating to Australia for a better life
“This is where generations of the Spagnolo family would help shape the community we came to love,” says Rocco Spagnolo
"People often ask me what the Spagnolo story is.
"To me, it's never really been about business. It's about family, community and making sure you leave your town a little better than you found it." - Rocco Spagnolo
The Philosophy that has Guided the Family since the First Generation of Spagnolos Arrived in Australia.

"We didn't come looking for riches," Mr Spagnolo says. "We came looking for opportunity. Australia gave us that opportunity, but Griffith gave us a home."
Like thousands of Italian migrants after the Second World War, they arrived with little more than determination, practical skills and an extraordinary work ethic.
"When we arrived, everyone worked," Rocco says. "Nobody asked whether the job was too hard. You simply did what had to be done for your family."
Mr Spagnolo says his Family's Story is also Griffith's Story.
"My grandparents and parents weren't unusual,” he says. “They were part of a whole generation of Italian families who rolled up their sleeves and helped build Griffith. We all grew together."
Rocco Spagnolo says: "There wasn't much money around, but there was an incredible work ethic. People looked after each other.
“Every migrant family brought something with them. Some brought farming knowledge, others brought trades, some built businesses. Together they built this community."
The Family's Early Roots were in Farming and Wine-Making, and for Mr Spagnolo some of Life's Biggest Lessons came long before he Studied to Become an Accountant.
"I probably learnt more standing behind the counter at the winery than I ever did at university," Rocco laughs. "I started selling wine when I was eight years old. I'd crush grapes, help customers and watch how my grandfather treated people."
The family winery wasn't simply somewhere that wine was made. It was where conversations happened, friendships grew and lifelong relationships were formed. "The winery wasn't just about making wine," Mr Spagnolo says. "It was where people gathered. Friends came in, neighbours came in and stories were shared over a glass of wine."
Watching his Grandfather work left a Lasting Impression
Rocco says: "He knew everyone's name. He would ask about their family before he ever talked about business."
"That's where I learnt the lesson that's stayed with me all my life. Business is built on relationships, not transactions."
"People don't remember your balance sheet. They remember how you made them feel."
Those Values were Reinforced at Home - Rocco (Roy) Spagnolo
Mr Spagnolo’s mother, Rita, became one of Griffith's quiet community champions by teaching English to newly arrived Italian girls, interpreting for families at doctors' appointments and helping people navigate everyday Australian life.
"Mum never looked for recognition," Rocco says. "If someone needed help filling out a form, she'd help. If they couldn't speak English at the doctor, she'd go with them." "She believed that's simply what neighbours did."
Mr Spagnolo’s father, Giuseppe, arrived in Sydney in 1949 after a 24-day voyage from Reggio Calabria carrying little more than his tailoring skills and a determination to succeed.
"Dad arrived with a suitcase, a tailoring trade and a willingness to work," Roy says. "He never expected anything to be handed to him. He believed if you worked hard enough, opportunities would come."
Within a decade Giuseppe had established Continental Dry Cleaners and Menswear on Griffith's Banna Avenue.
Within a generation, Rocco would build one of regional New South Wales' most respected accounting practices.
Yet he says Success has never been Measured Purely by Business
"I've always believed if your business succeeds, your community should succeed too,” Mr Spagnolo says. "You never achieve anything worthwhile on your own."
That thinking would eventually help lead to one of the family's most significant community contributions - bringing private hospital services to Griffith.
"The hospital wasn't about bricks and mortar," Rocco says. "It was about making life easier for local families." "People shouldn't have to drive hours for quality healthcare if they don't have to."
"I could afford to fly to Sydney if I needed specialist treatment. A lot of people couldn't. That never sat comfortably with me." "If we could help bring those services to Griffith, why wouldn't we?"
For Mr Spagnolo, Community has always come before Recognition.
"What makes me proud isn't what we've built for ourselves,” he says. “It's what we've been able to help build for Griffith."
His grandfather saw it much the same way decades earlier.
"We planted vines," Rocco said, "but what we were really planting was a future for our children."
Today, Roy sees himself as simply another chapter in a much longer family story.
"Every generation writes another chapter." "My grandparents laid the foundations. Mum and Dad built on them. My job has simply been to continue what they started."
The Spagnolo Family came to Australia Searching for a Better Life - Rocco Spagnolo
"What makes me proud isn't what we've been able to achieve for ourselves. It's what we've been able to help build for everyone around us."
"If people remember us as a family who worked hard, treated people well and gave something back, that's enough."
"This website isn't really about looking backwards," Rocco Spagnolo says.
"It's about preserving the stories, values and lessons that shaped our family and celebrating the Griffith community that gave us so much," Roy continued. “And of course making sure the next generation understands where it all began."
Because for the Spagnolo family, the story that began with a boat leaving Italy is still being written today.
